Being the president of the KAY club, the task of recruiting new members is one of the most terrifying and rewarding things that I get to do. One of the most important questions I get to answer from a plethora of students, parents, and community members alike is: What is KAY, anyway?
That is a very good question. KAY has a 'technical' description that I can spout off in my sleep "a character building, leadership training, service organization' but that doesn't really answer the question of what KAY is, what KAY does, and why KAY is something that they, their kids, or the members of their community should be involved with. So, what is KAY?
KAY is a little more than a club. KAY is a little more than a blurb on a resume or scholarship application. (although, it does look nice on such things) KAY teaches young adults how to be leaders and how to serve graciously and with all of their being.
That sounds cheesy, I know. It sounds downright ridiculous, even. Aside from KAY being something that looks good for applications and resumes, it's something that really gives back; to the community and the participant.
The act of serving and giving is a gift in itself, and that's what KAY is.
